Overview

There are 13 major commercial ports of Algeria that serve the country’s international trade transport requirements. Out of these, 8 ports serve as general cargo ports, 3 are mixed ports, and 2 serve as energy ports.

The port of Arzew El-Djedid is solely owned and operated by SERPORT, along with the port of Bethioua. The ports are responsible majorly for hydrocarbon exports from Algeria. The Arzew Port Company was founded in 1982, which later went public in 1989 and since then has been solely owned by the Algerian State.

Location

The Port of Algiers (El-Jazair in Arabic) is the main seaport of Algeria in northern Africa. Built on the slopes of the Sahel Hills, Port of Algiers stretches for ten miles along the Bay of Algiers. The Port of Algiers is located about half-way between the Port of Dellys to the east and the Port of Cherchell to the west on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Its name comes from the Arabic word al-jaza’ir, meaning “the islands.”

The number of berths in the port is 39, including:

  • General cargo berths-containers and RO-RO berths.
  • Grain and fodder berths.
  • Unpacked cargo berths, cooled cargo berths and general cargo berths.

The depth of sea waters in such berths ranges from 9 up to 14 meters, while its total length is 7837 meters. Such berths are provided with modern equipment and installations for cargo handling and stowage, in addition to carrying it from the port, also forklift and other electronic lifts of different types, some of which are of 3.2.15 tons capacity. Moreover, lifts for unloading grains, receiving dock with a length reaching 4000 meters and the sea depth along the dock ranging between 4.5 and 6 meters.

Productivity Features

The port has a channel depth of 10.4 metres, which is ideal for oil tankers and large container ships. The oil terminal is 10.4 metres deep while the cargo pier has a depth of 7.6 metres.

The maximum size of the vessel that can be accommodated in the port is 500 feet. The port has fixed cranes of 24 to 49 MT capacity, and the average annual traffic is recorded at 3000 vessels and nearly 67 million MT of cargo.
