Jeddah Islamic Port is the primary gateway to the Holy Mosque in Mecca for Muslim pilgrims from around the world. Having enjoyed historical significance since it was established in 646 A.D. during the reign of the Caliph Uthman ibn Affan, the port today is the biggest gateway for Saudi Arabia’s imports and exports and the Red Sea’s top re-export point, with 75 percent of the country’s exports and inbound transshipment going through it.


The Khalifa Bin Salman Port is a major seaport of Bahrain located on the island of Hidd northeast of the main archipelago. It became operational in 2009 and is privately operated by the famous port operating company, APM terminals and is supervised by the Ports and Maritime Affairs department of the country’s government. The port was recently expanded and is envisaged to be a premier transhipment hub of the northern Arabian gulf region.

The number of berths in the port is 39, including:

  • General cargo berths-containers and RO-RO berths.
  • Grain and fodder berths.
  • Unpacked cargo berths, cooled cargo berths and general cargo berths.

The depth of sea waters in such berths ranges from 9 up to 14 meters, while its total length is 7837 meters. Such berths are provided with modern equipment and installations for cargo handling and stowage, in addition to carrying it from the port, also forklift and other electronic lifts of different types, some of which are of 3.2.15 tons capacity. Moreover, lifts for unloading grains, receiving dock with a length reaching 4000 meters and the sea depth along the dock ranging between 4.5 and 6 meters.

Located on 110 hectares (ha) of reclaimed land, the port has a 1,800m quay which includes a 900m2 container terminal served by four 61m post-Panamax cranes, as well as general cargo, Ro-Ro and passenger facilities.KBSP’s strategic location in the middle of the Arabian Gulf, together with its deep-water berths and approach channel enables it to accept the largest oceangoing container vessels and its direct overland links to the mainland of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia positions the port as a major regional distribution center.

Located in Hidd Industrial Area, the port is only 13km away from the Bahrain international Airport and 5km purpose-built causeway. Access to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia via the King Fahad Causeway is a mere 30km drive.

  • Located on or near global shipping lines connecting three continents, which makes it the Red Sea’s top port for transit trade, and transshipment of containers and cargos, with around 5,000 vessels received annually.
  • 62 berths for handling passengers, containers, general cargos, livestock, bulk grains, and vehicles.
  • A logistics park for bonded storage and re-export that includes handling equipment, warehouses, open storage, refueling and truck terminals, which maximize vessel turnaround.
  • Specialized terminals with advanced equipment, including:
    1. Two container terminals with a combined capacity of 7.5 million TEUs
    2. A fully integrated logistics village for bonded storage and re-export
    3. Two general cargos terminals
    4. Two vessel service and repair berths
    5. Livestock berths with a capacity of seven million heads annually
    6. Berths for marine services, such as tugging and guidance
    7. Fully equipped terminals for pilgrims, tourists and inbound/outbound travelers.

Engineering Features

The port has a channel depth of 13.7 metres which makes it suitable for large vessels and oil tankers (Panamax and Supr-Panamax class ships). The average water depth at the cargo pier and oil terminal is 9.1 metres. The major exports handled by the Port of Bejaia since the early 2000s has been hydrocarbons and petroleum products.

Productivity Features

Providing a safe passage to the container ships and maintenance services are major priorities of this port. The port has a storage yard coverage of almost 18000 square metres and an open container ground of 400,000 square metres. Bejaia port is the only port in Algeria that has the authority of handling dangerous goods, with 6 hangers of 140,000 square metres each.
